PEST CONTROL ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES
If you are interested in employment in a pest control career, the first step is to talk to somebody who has worked in the field for a while to get a good perspective of just exactly what it's like.
Anyone who has worked any kind of route or delivery job will find that experience valuable when entering the field of pest control jobs. Any kind of experience in landscaping or landscape maintenance, basic woodworking and carpentry and chemistry will also be beneficial. In larger cities local libraries will likely have good resources to help you explore this field.
While there are around 65,000 pest control workers working in the U.S. there are clearly concentrations of these type jobs in specific areas. Large metropolitan areas employ the most workers as far as density of population is concerned. The other significant factor is that many of the jobs are concentrated in the South where longer warm seasons, consequently longer life cycles of pests exist. However, there are pest control companies in virtually every area of the country. Around 10% of pest controllers own and operate their own company.
Exterminators usually start out by applying for their jobs found in news paper ads or referred by friends and family. Some of these jobs require applying through a local employment security division, while other take applications directly from prospective workers. To get a reference or suggestion check with a company that uses a pest control company.
Advancing in a pest control job is like advancing in most occupations. It requires time on the job, advancing skill sets, and good work habits. Opportunities as route managers, service managers, company managers, pesticide industry employees and others are all potential opportunities. And there is also the possibility that with the right training and skill you may be able to own and run your own exterminating company.
Salaries for pest contol jobs vary widely throughout the U.S. according to geographic area, which company they are with and the position the worker holds. With the median annual income of pest conrol workers being around $31,000 currently, the lowest 10% of workers earn around $21,000. The highest paid 10% earn around $46,000.
